Some short Morning Prayers,
for the use of such as do not use their own words when having family prayers.
Morning Prayer.
(The Catechism.)
I thank thee, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ thy beloved Son our Lord, that thou hast kept me this night from all harm and danger. I pray thee to care for me this day also, and to keep me from sin and all evil; that all my thoughts, words, and deeds, may please thee. I commit myself into thy hands with body and soul and all things. Let thy holy angels not depart from me, that the evil enemy may have no power over me. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer. The Benediction.
Another Morning Prayer.
I heartily thank thee, dear heavenly Father in Christ, for rest and sleep and thy protection this night, and for the day and the grace which thou again hast given us. When I awake I am with thee. Great and undeserved is thy goodness toward us. — Continue to surround us with thy angels, and keep us from all evil this day. Deliver all thy children from the craftiness and power of the devil; give us victory in all temptations, and patience in all tribulations; give us grace to do good every hour, to honor thee, and minister to one another with cheerful hearts. Let thy word today make progress on earth; bless it on the hearts everywhere, in homes and schools and churches, here and among the Jews and the heathen. Keep thy doctrine pure among us; and graciously preserve us from heresy and error. Bless our country and people, our president, and all in authority. Help us everywhere to walk before thee in the light, to be governed by thy good Spirit, and to bend our steps heavenward. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer. The Benediction.
Another Morning Prayer.
O God, thou fountain of life and peace; we thank thee for thy gracious protection and for the rest which we have enjoyed; for life and light and every good thing. Keep us, we beseech thee, this day; compass us about with thy angels, bless our labor, and pronounce thy peace upon us. Let the Lord be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant. And my tongue shall speak of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long. Our Father which art in heaven, etc. The Lord be with us! The Lord make his face to shine upon us, etc.
Another Morning Prayer.
Blessed be the Lord forevermore! Blessed be the Lord, whose mercies are new every morning! I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me. What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits toward me? I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord. Keep thy servant, that I may be found blameless before thee. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. Our Father, etc. The Lord be with us! The Lord bless, etc.
Another Morning Prayer.
I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart; and I will glorify thy name forevermore. For thou art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth. Today and forevermore will I give myself to thee with all my heart. Help me thereto by thy Holy Spirit. Teach me thy way; I will walk in thy truth; order my steps in thy word, and make thy face to shine upon thy servant. Let thy name be excellent in all the earth; let Satan be put to shame; let the peoples come to thee. Comfort the afflicted; preserve our country; be our sun and shield. Our Father, etc. The Lord be with us! The Lord bless us, etc.
Another Morning Prayer.
Lord my God, thou dost greet me with mercies every morning. How shall I thank thee as I ought? “Bless and sanctify my soul with heavenly blessing, that it may become thy holy habitation, a temple for thy eternal glory; and that there in this temple of God may be found nothing to offend thy divine and holy sight. — Look down upon me according to thy plenteous mercy and thy great compassion; and protect the soul of thy poor servant among the many dangers of this fleeting life. Attend me with thy mercy; and guide my feet in the path of peace to the bright and eternal home beyond the sky. Amen.”* Our Father, etc. The Lord be with us! The Lord bless us, etc.
* Kempis.
Another Morning Prayer.
Heavenly Father, we heartily thank thee for each new day which thou dost give us, with peace and every blessing of soul and body. We humbly beseech thee, preserve our heart, our life, our home, our people. Deliver us from lying and ungodliness, unbelief, strife, injustice, and all the wickedness of the devil. Grant that today and always we may live together in the light before thee, with upright hearts willingly and gladly serve one another in love, and then be gathered together in eternal glory. Our Father, etc. The Lord be with us! The Lord bless us, etc.
